June 26, 2006

Here's a site for Clocky, an alarm clock that runs from you when you press snooze. It then finds another spot in the room and goes off again, playing a wonderful game of hide and seek with you when you want to play the most. You know, first thing in the morning.

In the school Vs. Google story, I mentioned that there are ways to use Google that could be exploited to find more than websites. Here's a site detailing some ways.

School Probably Doesn’t Have Good Security; Blames Google For Info Loss

June 26, 2006

There are a number of books and sites out there that show you how to exploit Google's search engine in order to grab information that you shouldn't have access to. Someone was able to do that and ran off with Social Security numbers and test scores from 619 students from Catawba County Schools' servers. They blame Google. However, the only way that you can use Google to view information off of servers like this is if the information isn't protected very well, if at all. The school board insists that their information was secured. So Google must have hacked into their servers then, right?

Microsoft Blames Malware on ‘Stupid Users’

June 26, 2006

This story is a little bit old, but the link goes to a blog commenting on an eWeek article in which a Microsoft security official said that recovering a system after a malware attack is becoming impossible. He cites reasons such as malware that basically replicates itself, changing directories so that you can't git rid of it and so on. I can see where he's coming from in a sense, I've dealt with a number of viruses/adware/malware that are becoming increasingly more difficult to get rid of. He says that it's easier to "nuke the systems" (ie: reformat, rebuild) and I've done that too depending upon the time that it will involve.

But here's the best part:

"Social engineering is a very, very effective technique. We have statistics that show significant infection rates for the social engineering malware. Phishing is a major problem because there really is no patch for human stupidity," he said.

I'm sorry if you've been taken in by a phishing site, if you've cashed a cashier's check for a Nigerian official, if you've been convinced that your eBay, Paypal or bank account has been hacked and you've handed over your information – but you're an idiot. Close the internet and turn your computer off. The only way that your computer can be infected, the only way you can fall victim to phishing is if you do something, if you go somewhere that you shouldn't be. Just because there is a blue underlined phrase in your email, doesn't mean you should click on it.

Apple To Staff and Train Own People To Sell Products At Best Buy

June 26, 2006

This is definitely good news. There's already enough clueless Geek Squad/PC "experts" at Best Buy, we don't need to add clueless Apple employees to the mix.

Fingernail Sized USB Drive – Wear As Jewelry?

June 26, 2006

You know, flash drives make IT workers' jobs a TON easier by being able to carry around important files, apps, and settings – especially when you're not able to access your company's network (for troubleshooting, etc). However, if you think that USB drives can only be used as storage, well then you're an idiot:

idisk
Screw capacity, you can WEAR IT IN YOUR EAR!

Digg v3 Day

June 26, 2006

To celebrate the launching of Digg v3 today I'll be pretty much Digg-blogging all day. The last couple of weeks have been really busy at work so I haven't been able to post much, but I'm forcibly changing that today. Happy Digg v3 Day!

How-To: Be Traumatized On The Job

June 19, 2006

IT is a stressful field to be employed in. In fact, according to a recent study, 97% of IT workers are traumatized by their jobs. Now, I would never have said that I was "traumatized" by my job. Stressed out? Yes. Filled with rage? Of course. Wanting to set fire to the datacenter? I ponder that on a daily basis. Yet, never traumatized. That was until today.

That was until, during a routine virus/malware scan, I found nude pictures of a co-worker on their laptop. It sure is nice when you're changing directories, looking for that pesky file that needs to be deleted, and then you're suddenly struck with thumbnails of pictures of your nude co-worker. It makes it especially nice when it's a guy with an office a few doors down. In addition, I was doing the scan at home as a pseudo favor to the guy. So now I have my own personal workspace tainted by this horrible memory.

I'd rather deal with a server crash.
